A
GRANDMOTHER'S PRAYER
by
Helen MacGregor
My grandchild lies within my arms,
The dearest thing on earth,
So softly formed and sweetly made,
A joy to me since birth.
My grandson lies within my arms,
His eyes so bright and clear,
He smiles at me and waves his hands,
Without a thought of fear.
My grandson lies within my arms,
Without
a thought of harm,
The sirens screams, the blackout
comes,
At last
we've war's alarms.
Another babe so long ago
Was cradled soft in
hay,
His message to the world was love
That peace might come to stay.
O may this war be over soon,
And all the
hatred cease,
And war's alarm and hatred pass,
Then we may
live in peace.
My grandson lies within my arms,
So pure
without a stain,
And peace will come at last to stay,
And
brotherhood will reign.

This was written soon after the birth of her
first grandson who was born just a month
before Pearl Harbor in 1941.
That grandson is my husband, Doug.
